Roman Reloaded

Roman Reloaded

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” Marilyn Monroe said this who is an iconic woman in everyone’s eyes today.  Nicki Minaj has also become iconic in her own way.  She may not be famous for the same reason as Monroe but she sure knows how to get people’s attention.  Minaj came on the music scene about three years ago when she signed a record deal with Lil Wayne’s music group called Young Money.  Young Money has several young and fresh rappers that Lil Wayne has taken under his rap wing.  Minaj was the first hard core female rapper to come on the scene since her very public enemy Lil Kim.  Lil Kim who is known for her vulgar lyrics and barely their clothing hates Minaj who also raps about vulgar things and wears eclectic clothing.  Minaj lures people in with her insane fashion choices that resemble much of Lady Gaga.  From the sounds of it Minaj comes across as a female copy cat trying to wear last year’s Versace.
In her new album “Roman Reloaded” she has 22 tracks several have big name features in the rap world, her founder Lil Wayne, brief romancer Drake, and friend Chris Brown.  If you follow Minaj at all you know about her 2012 Grammy performance back in February she preformed her single “Roman Holiday”, she did an expected over the top performance yet no one expected it to be what it was.  She walked on the red carpet and a red cape with her “Priest” holding her hand.  In her performance, which closed the 54th annual Grammys, she did an onstage exorcism which involved her being exorcised.  If she was trying to get noticed she did but she is already so well known it didn’t seem necessary to be that insane on stage.  This again sounds a little Gaga doesn’t it? But the girl can rap and even if she’s wearing Gagas rejects she can sure rock them better than you could.
Nicki Minaj doesn’t play by the rules and doesn’t care what anyone thinks.  She has alter egos and her most infamous one is her character “Roman”.  Minaj in the past has explained him as her bad self that she has very little control over.  On her last album, Pink Friday, she introduced Roman in “Romans Revenge”, a song about her rival Lil Kim.  Lil Kim of course did a song in reply to Minajs called “Black Friday”; both left nothing to the imagination and had no restraints on what was said.  Roman is mentioned throughout Minajs whole album but she has two songs completely dedicated to Roman, “Roman Holiday” and “Romans Revenge”.
Minaj raps but can also carry a tune, she shows off her vocals on most of her choruses and isn’t bad.  She has made this album very cohesive which is hard considering she has a whopping 22 tracks.  Track 2, “Come on a Cone”, not her most impressive with lines like “damn I’m so cold I should come on a cone” and her random break into “put my dick in your face” which she’s shows off her vocals for.  Yet it’s all so random and pretty cheesy but she does bring the cone aspect into another song called “Champions” talking about ice cream cones.  So although some songs are random and you wonder what went through her head you won’t mind it because for whatever reason it ends up making sense.
“Starships” is her most recent single, a cute going out jam that’s easy to sing along with.  In the video she channels one of her idols, Marilyn Monroe.  She rocks Monroe’s famous hairdo with her own twist, hot pink instead of blonde.  Minaj ties Monroe throughout the album and even has a song named after her, “Marilyn Monroe”, she compares herself to the idol and talks about the hardships she went through.  The Monroe thing works for Nicki and works on this album.  Minajs body just like Monroe’s is highly talked about and many strive for her body.  She like Monroe has insane curves and her best asset, her ass.  “Marilyn Monroe” is one of her slow ballads but she has several dance tunes like “Starships”.  “Pound the Alarm”, “Va Va Voom”, ‘Whip It”, and “Turn Me On” featuring the club music leader David Guetta.  These songs will have you unfortunately fist pumping but in a good way, not sure if that’s possible after the “Jersey Shore”.
As a strong female rapper Nicki Minaj has had several tunes about being a woman but many might get fed up with her use of bitch, hoe, and pussy.  She says these words more than you’ve breathed while reading this.  She even has a song, “Stupid Hoe”, which over and over states “you a stupid hoe, you a you a stupid hoe”.  You might be convinced that you’re a stupid hoe but don’t worry it’s just the way she is and she’s not going to change.  She doesn’t care if she offends anyone which makes her far from boring.  There is a very good balance of slow ballads, cheesy dance tunes, and hard core rap which makes for an eclectic album but it’s all cohesive so it makes sense.
Songs on their own are solid some better than others but you have 22 to chose from so you’re bound to like at least one, or maybe half of one. Some might need a roman holiday after listening and some may be craving for more. If you’re into the mainstream stuff test out “Starships” and if your fiending for some badass rap put on “Roman Reloaded”.  Put on some hot pink lipstick, hip hugging pants, a pink wig and your ready to channel your inner Nicki, or if you’re feeling hardcore maybe channeling your inner Roman. Whatever your mood is you’ll be able to find some tune to express how you feel.  Nicki Minaj is absolutely ridiculous but like Monroe said its better than being absolutely boring.

Website

Breathtaking and refreshing is what you might think when you go to williamfrederking.com.  William Frederking captures people, mainly dancers, moving.  Frederking is a well known photographer in the dance world of Chicago.  The first shot on the website was in face breathtaking and refreshing, a beautiful dancer leaping in a beautiful dress.  A very captivating shot however the website fell a little flat after that but then picks right back up.  The photographs he has on there are very good but the way its set up makes it a little hard to see all of its potential.  It’s set up in a slideshow format and some of the best shots are all the way at the end.  There’s even a shot of that same leaping dancer but this time a baby is sitting underneath, very cool but that shot should be the first one to pull you in and make you want to see more.  It’s very prevalent that Frederking enjoys movement and what that movement looks like on camera.  There are very few if any shots of someone standing still and posing.  It’s all about how the body looks when falling or jumping.  Many photographs of dancers turning and pulling or reaching while in the air.  Facial expressions are very real which make the photos stick out more. Shots also range from actual performances to in studio settings.  The performance ones are very captivating, you feel like you’re watching the dancers perform.  The in studio shots are nice as well, some much better than others but still good. He has shots on the website from 1990 until current; it is interesting to look at old ones to his most current works.  The older ones are all black and white but his more current shots are in color but usually with a white background. This website features only dance related shots, some are better than others but the overall website is great.  Breathtaking and refreshing.

Shahs of Sunset
Step aside Real Housewives of every city, the Shahs of Sunset have arrived.  Bravo has added some fresh faces to their eclectic family.  These Persian faces all reside in Beverly Hills, drive Mercedes, and swipe their credit card like it’s going out of style.  Being in style is number one on their list, a cat fight even started because someone wore last year’s Versace.  This petty fight lasts throughout the whole episode which forces you to pick sides, Anita or GG.  GG owns a taser, so choose wisely.  Mj and Reza make a dynamic duo.  They bring the laughs on in this show.  A typical day for them involved attending a lavish pool party complete with a tiger.  Over the top is an understatement these Persians know how to throw parties and spend money.  Image Is Everything, not only the title of the episode but the title to their lives.  GG complains of being so stressed out over picking out what bathing suit she will wear in Vegas.  The sad part about it is that’s all GG has to be stressed out about since she doesn’t work, daddy’s got that part covered.  Shahs of Sunset are the classier version of the Jersey Shore.  They party just as hard but are far from trashy.  The cast age ranges from 26 to 34 but with a few drinks in them it’s like watching a clip from mean girls.  They all went to Beverly Hills High and its clear some think they are still there.  Passive aggressive to full on rage when a guest doesn’t say hello.
Bravo is one of the trendiest networks right now.  They have the Real Housewives franchise, top chef spinoffs; million dollar listing in two different cities, the list goes on and on.  They are the hottest shows on TV currently.  Most of their shows revolve on around money, million dollar match maker, million dollar listing, no one on the bravo network is modest with their dollar bills. The Shahs of Sunset is no exception money is everything to them.  Besides money Bravo loves groups of people, mostly female, that love drama and can put on a good show.  Shahs are just like real housewives or any other show on Bravo right now but it’s the cast that can make or break it.  They have a solid group with a mixture of personalities which makes for an entertaining show.  Bravo has a way of hypnotizing you, you can’t help but watch.  Sometimes you’re so into it you don’t even care that you’ve already seen the episode twice before.
The girls on shahs look and dress like the Kardashians and can be annoying like them too but it’s much more enjoyable watching GG yell in some girls face then Kim cry over her 72 day marriage.  This show seems like it might be the same each episode, crazy party, drama, shopping, lunch, cat fight, but when you sit down to relax isn’t that what you want?  Reality TV is rarely good but it sure is entertaining.  If you’re a fan of any show on Bravo it would be hard to not enjoy Shahs of Sunset.

The Aqua Tower

The Willis Tower, Cloud Gate, and The John Hancock are some of the most memorable architecture in Chicago.  However many don’t get the recognition they deserve.  They may not project the city skyline or have the bragging rights of being one of the tallest buildings in the world but the Aqua tower deserves just as much attention.  The Aqua was designed by Jeanne Gang which leads it to be the tallest skyscraper designed by a woman.  That right there is extremely impressive.  Jeanne Gang is also the founder of Studio Gang Architects which is a Chicago based company.  The Aqua has beautiful views of Lake Michigan and the wave like balconies both influenced the name.  Each floor looks different because of the curvy white balconies. Gang actually designed each floor differently so they are each unique and not one is the same as the next.  It starts to trip you out after looking at it for too long.  It also depends on the time of day and where you are in reference to it.  The closer the better because you can really see the design and appreciate how different it is.  When you look at the building from a distance it looses its uniqueness and isn’t as impressive. When close and looking up it looks like hundreds of never ending ripples.  You would never guess you were looking at an apartment building and a hotel.  The views from inside are breathtaking because of how close the lake is.  During the day you can see all of its details and at night you can focus on the white balconies against the black sky.  The Aqua is 82 stories high but it’s not about the height for this building it’s about the design of it which looks more like a sculpture or a piece of art not something that’s functional.  Besides the wake like balconies and Lake Michigan The Aqua also got some help for its name because of its surrounding buildings.  The buildings in the Lakeshore East development follow a nautical theme with buildings called The Tides, The Shoreham, and The Regatta.  These however look like every other conventional skyscraper.  If you took away the balconies The Aqua too would look like the other conventional buildings.  But there’s something about the way Gang built the balconies and the way they look against the conventional building.  She found a new and unique way of shaping something so simple and normally square.  She took what we see everyday on buildings and put a new and modern twist. The Vancouver Pair in Canada, also designed by Gang and her team, is very similar to the Aqua.  It looks like a similar design but two paired directly next to each other. You can see in much of Gangs work that she creates things that look like there is movement and creates very new and elegant designs.  Gang and her team have also designed a few other building in Chicago that will amaze and intrigue you including Ford Calumet Environmental Center, Nature Boardwalk at the Lincoln Park Zoo, or the Columbia College Chicago Media Production Center. These all are amazing in their own way but you’ll find The Aqua tower is her most impressive in Chicago.  The Aqua is located right in the heart of downtown and also across the street from the famous Millennium Park.  The building may get overlooked because of all that the park has to offer but take a look behind you and appreciate a remarkable skyscraper.

Black Dogs Review

The gangs all here. Patrick, Alex (fresh out of jail), Frenchy, and stereo stealing Keith make up the ultimate bad boy group.  Black Dogs written by Jason Buhrmester is the ultimate rock and roll book.  It’s a tale about those four guys and their past and present crime record.  Their new goal is to do the unthinkable and rob a band, Led Zeppelin.  Patrick was involved in the crime that landed Alex in jail so at his “Welcome Home” party he suggests this crazy idea to rob Zeppelin.  Why would anyone who just got out of jail four hours ago want to be involved with a serious robbery?  Patrick is one with words and made a pretty convincing argument on how it will work.
You’ll be on the edge of your seat with each page turn wondering how they are going to pull this one off.  They have a solid plan but of course many things go wrong.  One of the buds ends up in jail which leads them to find a new fourth member.  The only semi capable guy is Danny who batched the last one because he saw a snake and now Alex has the bite marks to prove it.  Danny is a high school dropout and in his twenties he’s got nothing going for him except for these robberies.  They have no choice but to take a gamble on him.  Frenchy also told Zeppelins crew that he had an extremely rare guitar, 1958 Les Paul Guitar, and he would be showing it to them in New York City at the Drake hotel.  This of course brought up a set of new issues.  How were they going to get that goddamn guitar? There are so many times where you wonder how are they going to pull this off.
“Black Sabbath” is a constant theme throughout; Patrick loves them and is constantly talking about them or wearing their name on his t-shirt.  Alex doesn’t even like Led Zeppelin which makes it easier for him to want to rob them.  They all know the band carries loads of cash in a briefcase.  There are roughly 200,000 in the briefcase the night they want to steal it.  Now that’s a whole lot of cash.  They plan to split it four ways if they pull it off.  They also have to find out who is carrying this briefcase and where it will end up.  They guess it will be put into a safe in the hotel.  A safe they would have to break into.  If they don’t see who has the money and what room its going into then everything is seriously messed up.
These guys have some serious balls to try and bullshit their way through each obstacle.  Do people actually do this and get away with it?  Apparently in this book they do.  Motorcycle gangs, Misty Mountain Hoppers fan club, funk band called the New York Giants, they cross paths with every random person you can imagine.  The second to last chapter is called “getting away with murder” but do they pull this one off? You will have to read to find out.
Remember it’s the “possibly true story” of a robbery that happened to the band Led Zeppelin.  Buhrmester has a way with words and is a fabulous story teller.  Whether the story is true or false you will be left wanting more.  Even the writing of each intro to the chapters is cool and different.  You feel like a badass with every page turn.  By the end of the book you will feel like you smoked a pack of cigarettes, chugged a six pack, or smoked a blunt and who wouldn’t want that?

Bridesmaids

Kristen Wig seriously knocks it out of the park with the movie Bridesmaids.  We all know she’s hilarious in all of her SNL skits but in this movie she really shines.  From the first scene to the last you’ll be dying of laughter.  The movie is about two best friends and one of them is getting married. The other, Kristen Wig, hits a rough patch in life and has to be there for her friend, Maya Rudolph, as maid of honor.  Sounds like a cheesy chick flick, right? You’re completely wrong on that one.  Yes it has some chick flick moments however the actors and script are amazing.  Wig and Rudolph are perfect and extremely funny.  Melissa McCarthy in some ways steals the show.  She is the overweight manly sister of the husband to be.  McCarthy commits 100 percent to her character; every scene she is in you will be laughing.  Her husband even makes a cameo and they are hilarious to watch.  Each actor fits their role perfectly, Rose Byrne plays the stuck up snob, Wendi McLendon-Covey the drunk, and Ellie Kamper the innocent friend.  Each character is a typical stereotype of women which they pulled off perfectly.  They all bring different humor to this movie and they each make it an amazing hit. The story line and plot are so “been there done that” but they find ways to make it new and exciting.  Like every other movie the main character, Wig, falls in love as well but she does it so unwillingly and funny that you can’t help but laugh.  This movie appeals to so many different people because of its charmingly funny script and actors.  Whoever was in charge of casting this movie, serious props to you.  People say it’s the “Hangover” for girls and in some ways it is but you’ll be able to see it’s so much more than that.  It shouldn’t even be in that category, the “Hangover” was great but Bridesmaids is so new and different that it should be in its own category.  You’ll be quoting this movie for days and you won’t be able to watch it just once.  Go grab a copy and get ready to laugh your ass off.

“Talk That Talk”
Boring is the perfect word to describe Rihanna and her new album “Talk That Talk”.  We Found Love could be an  instant hit, it has DJ Calvin Harris in it and talks about finding love in a hopeless place……been there done that.  This whole album has the feel of been there done that.   Her last album had some edgy songs like S&M but this album had none of that.  She tried (and failed) to use a DJ in one of her songs like Nicki Minaji and other artists but We Found Love  just sucked.  It’s catchy because she says the same thing over and over again.  We get it Rihanna you found love in a hopeless place.  Talk That Talk you think would be good featuring Jay-Z but his rap isn’t anything special.  In one line he says “Had it by a bladder, she like ‘oh I gotta pee’” Who wants to hear anything about going to the bathroom when they are listening to music……no one.  He also raps about “getting dome”, Jay-Z you have officially stooped down to sounding like all the other trashy rappers in the music biz. Rihanna tries to mix it up with slow and upbeat songs and even has a “touching” love song called Farewell but there is nothing “touching” about it. The whole album sounds the same, each song blends into the next and not in a good way.  Her last album had a lot more edgy songs and they differentiated her from the other leading ladies in music right now.  But this album knocked her down a few levels, it’s all too safe.  There is not one song that makes you think “that was a risk”.  Her titles trick you into thinking this album will sound new and fresh.  She has a song called Birthday Cake which is a pretty cool name.  Rihanna, birthday, and a cake………sounds pretty awesome but it wasn’t even close to being awesome it was again BORING.  Was she actually drunk when she recorded Drunk on Love? It sure sounds like it.  Was everyone drunk when she recorded this entire album? It sounds like they had no time and some random person wrote the lyrics.  Half of the songs don’t even make sense.  Even the album cover is bad, just Rihanna licking her top lip and a fake tattoo that says “Talk That Talk”……..original.  If you want to waste money and time then buy this album.

"Unbroken"- Album Review

Demi Lovato: “Unbroken”

Demi Lovato went from Disney star to train wreck in a matter of seconds.  Most people know her from being the star of a Disney Chanel show called Sonny With a Chance. Last year her name was more well known for punching her backup dancer in the face.  Lovato was checked into rehab for several different issues including cutting herself and bulimia.  Almost a year later she released a album titled “Unbroken”.  Her first single was “Skyscraper”, about her personal issues, which was a huge hit.  Lovato's new album is very different compared to her old ones.  She talks about going out and guys in a way she hasn’t before. This album has collaborators from Jason Derulo all the way to Timbaland and Missy Elliot.  Many of the songs talk about love and heartbreak which she went through right before her stay in rehab with Jonas Brothers Joe Jonas.  You hear the pain and suffering in many of her songs including “Lightweight” and “Fix a Heart”.  Lovato also sings about her rocky relationship with her father in “For the Love of a Daughter”.  “Who's That Boy” featuring Dev is a great pump up song for hanging with friends or working out at the gym.  Every song on this album sounds new and fresh. There is a great balance of serious and fun songs, each song flows into the next.  Disregard her past with Disney because this album has several hits and unlike most Disney stars Lovato has an amazing voice. I  strongly suggest you pick up a copy of “Unbroken”.
